Passive House Principles - Debunking Passive House Myths
1. Myth: Passive Houses are too expensive.
Debunk: While some initial costs may be slightly higher, long-term energy savings often offset this. Many Passive Houses are built within standard budgets and we believe that you donβt have to pay any extra with clever design and planning.
2. Myth: You canβt open windows in a Passive House.
Debunk: Windows can be opened freely. The ventilation system ensures fresh air even when windows are closed, but occupants have full control. By not having to open windows noise intrusion is reduced.
3. Myth: Passive Houses are stuffy and lack fresh air.
Debunk: They actually have excellent air quality due to constant filtered ventilation, often much better and healthier than traditional homes.
4. Myth: Passive Houses only work in mild climates.
Debunk: Passive House principles can be adapted to various climates, from hot and humid to extremely cold regions.
5. Myth: Passive Houses look unusual or unattractive.
Debunk: Passive Houses can have any architectural style. Many are indistinguishable from traditional homes. This is a BIG Passive House myth!
6. Myth: Passive Houses rely entirely on passive solar heating.
Debunk: While solar gain is considered, Passive Houses use various strategies for heating and cooling, not just sunlight.
7. Myth: Passive Houses are too airtight and can lead to mould.
Debunk: The controlled ventilation system prevents moisture build-up, actually reducing the risk of mould compared to standard homes.
8. Myth: Passive Houses are only for new construction.
Debunk: Existing buildings can be retrofitted to meet Passive House standards, though it may be more challenging.
9. Myth: Passive Houses require complex, hard-to-maintain systems.
Debunk: Most systems are simple and low-maintenance. The ventilation system typically needs filter changes like your vacuum cleaner!
10. Myth: Passive Houses are uncomfortably warm in summer.
Debunk: Proper design, including shading and ventilation, keeps Passive Houses comfortable year-round without air conditioning.
